Dogs 4 Wildlife – Treating wounds in anti-poaching dogs with light therapy

WARNING: Graphic images that might upset sensitive viewers. Dogs 4 Wildlife aims to provide both quality, highly trained dogs and specialised ranger training, for the development of anti-poaching canine units to protect endangered wildlife. Inspiring and motivating the next generation of wildlife protectors, through effective and determined education. This small Not for Profit offers educationally supported, fully operational anti-poaching dogs and training to conservancies and National Parks in need across Africa and the world.

To date they have supplied over seven dogs across Africa, with another six in training. The dogs are trained in the UK until they are deployed at 14/16 months old. Maintaining excellent health and muscle development is crucial in ensuring that they provide dogs that can withstand the demands required of long distant tracking.

The African bush can be extremely hard on these dogs, with snake and spider bites always a risk in their daily lives. Photizo agreed to supply the organisation with Photizo Vetcare units, via its UK distributor – Danetre Health Products – for use on the training dogs.

Shortly after the units were supplied, Hondo – one of the recently trained dogs – was bitten by a spider on his foreleg. The bite was particularly severe, causing necrotising of the skin. Hondo was treated with the Photizo Vetcare and his results were nothing less than incredible.

According to Dogs 4 Wildlife trainer, Jacqui Law: “I wanted to let you how amazed I am with the Photizo Vetcare red and infrared light treatment unit. Hondo received the spider bite in mid-October and his recovery has been fantastic. Even the vets are amazed at his healing, as they thought he might lose a toe, or worse. I have been documenting the recovery most days and it improves so much day on day. This really shows me how beneficial this could be out in Africa if injuries occur.”

Photizo Vetcare’s healing power will help to:

  • Stimulate the production of collagen. Collagen is an essential protein used to repair damaged tissue. It is the most common protein found in the body.
  • Increase circulation almost immediately. By helping to generate an increase in blood flow to the treatment areas the light therapy normalises and heals injured cells. By increasing blood flow more oxygen and nutrients are transported to the affected area, and waste products taken away.
  • Reduce oedema (swelling). Oedema has two components, liquid and protein. Researchers have shown that the lymph diameter and the flow of the lymph system can be nearly doubled with the use of light therapy.
  • Stimulate the release of endorphins which are the body’s own pain-fighting
