Reducing the appearance of vitiligo with light therapy

Vitiligo is a disease that causes loss of skin colour in patches. This happens when melanocytes – skin cells that make pigment – are attacked and destroyed, causing the skin to turn a milky-white colour. The discoloured areas usually get bigger with time. The condition can affect the skin on any part of the body. It can also affect hair and the inside of the mouth.

There are two types of vitiligo:

  • Nonsegmental or generalised vitiligo is the most common type. It happens when the white patches appear symmetrically on both sides of your body, such as on both hands or both knees. This type of vitiligo can have rapid loss of colour or pigment and tends to cover a large area.
  • Segmental vitiligo is much less common and happens when the white patches are only on one segment or side of your body, such as a leg, one side of the face, or arm. This type of vitiligo often begins at an early age and progresses for about one to two years and then usually stops.

How will light therapy help to stimulate the production of collagen and fibroblasts for reducing the appearance of vitiligo?

  • Increases circulation and the formation of new capillaries. This brings an immediate healthy glow to the skin, as new capillaries mean more oxygen and nutrients to each skin cell.
  • Increases lymph system activity. This reduces swelling and puffiness, as the lymph system is actually made more efficient over time, resulting in healthier skin overall.
  • Causes the release of ATP, or raw cellular energy. This provides energy to the cells to make the most of the additional blood, oxygen, nutrients, detoxification, growth, and repair.
  • Smooth overall skin tone.
  • Increase collagen production in the skin.
  • Increase fibroblast production.
  • Protect cells from damage.
