Treating lymphoedema with light therapy

Lymphoedema/lymphatic oedema is a condition of localised swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system. The lymphatic system functions as a critical portion of the body’s immune system and returns interstitial fluid to the bloodstream.

Lymphoedema is most frequently a complication of cancer treatment or parasitic infections, but it can also be seen in a number of genetic disorders. Though incurable and progressive, a number of treatments can improve symptoms. Tissues with lymphoedema are at high risk of infection because the lymphatic system has been compromised.

Low-level light therapy (LLLT) has been used in conjunction with other therapies such as intermittent pneumatic compression, manual/medical lymphatic drainage (MLD) and kinesiotaping for the treatment and management of limb lymphoedema. Evidence from practice and small scale studies demonstrates that LLLT can greatly influence outcomes and improve quality of life (QoL) in these groups of patients (Piller and Thelander, 1998).
