Treating necrosis in a cheetah with light therapy

A cheetah suffered severe tissue necrosis, infection, and loss of the left hind paw after being caught in a snare. He had undergone numerous unsuccessful corrective surgeries and each time it left the animal with even more necrotic tissue and skin.

Phototherapy was done for eight minutes, once a day for a week, and thereafter once every second day. The aim was to prevent infection and further tissue necrosis and produce a good granulation tissue bed for skin transplantations.

With the aid of phototherapy, no more necrosis took place, and a good granulation tissue bed was present sooner than expected. The phototherapy proved to have a calming and pain-relieving effect (serotonin effect); causing this wild cat to fall asleep during each of his phototherapy sessions.

Photizo Vetcare’s healing power helps to:

  • Stimulate the production of collagen. Collagen is an essential protein used to repair damaged tissue. It is the most common protein found in the body.
  • Increase circulation almost immediately. By helping to generate an increase in blood flow to the treatment areas the light therapy normalises and heals injured cells. By increasing blood flow more oxygen and nutrients are transported to the affected area, and waste products taken away.
  • Reduce oedema (swelling). Oedema has two components, liquid and protein. Researchers have shown that the lymph diameter and the flow of the lymph system can be nearly doubled with the use of light therapy.
  • Stimulate the release of endorphins which are the body’s own pain-fighting
