Treating sunburn in light-skinned dogs with light therapy

How will light therapy help treat sunburn in dogs?

Photizo Vetcare’s healing power will help to:

  • Stimulate the production of collagen. Collagen is an essential protein used to repair damaged tissue. It is the most common protein found in the body.
  • Increase circulation almost immediately. By helping to generate an increase in blood flow to the treatment areas light therapy normalises and heals injured cells, while at the same time reducing itchiness. By increasing blood flow more oxygen and nutrients are transported to the affected area, and waste products taken away.
  • Reduce oedema (swelling). Oedema has two components, liquid and protein. Researchers have shown that the lymph diameter and the flow of the lymph system can be nearly doubled with the use of light therapy.
  • Stimulate the release of endorphins which are the body’s own pain-fighting

Certain dog breeds such as Bull Terriers, Jack Russell and Pitt Bulls often have large areas of pink skin and they are fond of sunbathing on their backs, exposing their sensitive bellies to the sun. White or pink skin is very sensitive to UV rays and can easily get sunburnt if exposed for prolonged periods of time. The UV rays can also damage the skin, causing tiny little red dots that look like small blood vessels in the skin. This skin damage can easily turn cancerous and these cancers pose a great risk to the health of your pet.

Red and infrared light therapy can be used to help treat sunburn and reduce discomfort levels for your dog. NB: Veterinarians advise that you apply a high SPF sunblock (at least 40 or 50) to the sensitive parts of your pets’ skin every day, especially if they love being outdoors or sunbathing.
