A muscle spasm, also known as a charley horse or muscle cramp, refers to the involuntary, painful and forceful contraction of a muscle, most commonly in the thighs, calves, feet, hands, and arms. They can also occur in the abdomen or along the rib cage. Muscle spasms are typically harmless, but they may result in an inability to use the affected muscle for a short period of time.
Muscle spasms range in intensity from mild, uncomfortable twitches to significant discomfort, to intense, severe pain. The spastic muscle may feel harder than normal to the touch and/or appear visibly distorted. It may twitch. Spasms typically last from seconds to 15 minutes or longer, and may recur multiple times before going away.
Light therapy helps to provide relief for the pain suffered during muscle spasms by providing increased blood flow into the area being treated to ensure that any waste is quickly removed from the area.
How will light therapy help provide relief from muscle spasms?
