Using light therapy to help treat spider bites

A spider bite, also known as arachnidism, is an injury resulting from the bite of a spider. The effects of most bites are not serious. Most bites result in mild symptoms around the area of the bite.

Southern Africa has well over 2 200 known species of spiders with very few that are of medical importance. It is claimed that However, bites can be painful, causing swelling and ulceration around the wound area.

Two types of spider venom are found as harmful and dangerous to people. This includes venom composed mainly of cytotoxins and venom that consists of neurotoxins. The difference between these two types is obviously the nature of the main chemical components found within them and the physical damage that they cause to humans. Cytotoxins are substances that have a toxic effect on cells. Neurotoxins have a toxic effect on cells, but only a specific type of cells: neurons. They are destructive to nerve tissue.

Accelerating the healing process of spider bites and helping to minimise scarring can be achieved with the use of red and infrared light therapy.
