Acute pain<\/strong> following surgery<\/strong> is a predictable, physiological response to tissue damage<\/strong>. Patients are prepared for some degree of pain or discomfort but expect that it will pass. However, up to one third of patients undergoing common surgical procedures<\/strong> report persistent or intermittent pain<\/strong> of varying severity at one year postoperatively (1<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doctors usually define chronic pain<\/strong> as pain that lasts for three to six months or more. Chronic pain is difficult and costly to treat, with wider costs associated with increased health service use as well as reduced quality of life and economic productivity. The burden of disease from chronic post-surgical pain (CPSP) is potentially enormous if we consider the volume of surgical procedures performed annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
